The experienced sailor Gurra Krantz, with a America's Cup and Volvo Ocean Race participation behind them, will renew the sailing sport. He believes there's need for simplification.
The well-known Swedish Sailor, in Alicante as Cicerone for Volvo's guests to the start of the Volvo Ocean Race tomorrow, Krantz, who was Helm of the Swedish America's Cup boat "Sweden" in San Diego in 1992 and has four world races behind him, today is a sought after lecturer in management issues.
He has clear views on how sailing can be developed to be more understandable to the public and more interesting for sailors. " Remove all rules, "said Gurra Krantz, " but if there is contact between the boats, disqualify both ".
Krantz plans to try and arrange such a race in Sweden next year. "Something must be done to lift the sailing sport, " he said, referring to the upswing in interest that hockey has had, since someone dared to change the format. " It is impossible to compare sailing and hockey in all aspects," he said, but continuing: " from being fairly interesting, hockey is now the most interesting of all TV sports".
"Something must be learned from that," he claims.
Krantz will make it so that it is allowed to touch marks, he will remove rules on mark roundings and the basic keep clear rules.
"Everything is allowed, except for the collision. Then both will be disqualified," he said.
"If that doesn't work, we begin at the other end and enter simple rules that we need,"
_____________
I almost agree with him.
But at first I would lead experiment, having left in RRS only R2, 14
and R10, 11.

Remenber when you were a child, you began a just-created game and as you played you added new rules to stabilyze situations that you didnt expect and step by step you improved the game. I bet that soccer, rugby, hockey and sailing have followed the same stages. So that guy only proposes to do again what it has taken dozen of years to put up.
I frankly admire the experts of the isaf rules, but as you propose only few are sufficient to enjoy and race. It is not a reason to put down all what we do not understand.
To end, also that idea looks like to the ideas that conduct the world to the actual financial crisis which will have a great cost to us, hum ... in fact to many of us. That no-rules idea lead to a return in the dark past when we weared beast skins ... not my choice. _________________ Jean-Luc
don't know about real sailing, but in vsk when you create a race you can specify the conditions of victory. you can tick : no penalty inflicted, no penalty recieved.
i'll give it a try with online races, just to see what happens.
but i'm sure there will always be someone stupid enough to give another player a pen,for that player to loose. _________________ acc is evil
You believe, that it will be better when the ten new rules, tens exceptions to the rules (tens pages of laws and their treatments) will be added...?
You believe, that rules of races understand and correctly apply the majority of racers?
You can confirm with confidence, that you will answer all 10 questions (selectively taken by me from different forums) similarly like the jury decision has been formulated there?
Really? Ready to 'bet'???
How many collisions were at you in real races and how many protests was in your life? A proportion 10:1, 100:1, 1000:1?
Recollect yourself 'when you were a child' racer, for you was enough to know R10,11 only.
The 'dark past' arises not because of absence of rules.
The current chaos (economic crisis) has arisen for the reason that rules eventually have appeared as an artificial soap bubble which has burst.
But, generally speaking it is not my theme.
Look attentively who has made the proposal "No Rules".
He has the real objective bases to consider so (as I and as many other real racers).
