Posted: 02 Apr 2008 9:54 Post subject: Problem installing and finding new boats in VS5 |
|
|
I have followed install instructions and the 'Boats' folder ended up with zip files but no sub-folders.
I have made new folders 'AC90' and 'Libera A' and put the zip files in these.
Do I have to un zip these or does the program do this?
Where in the VS5 GUI do I select new boats?
Sorry for lots of questions but I am in a complete muddle with VS5 at present.
Any help appreciated.

1) ok, but you run the .exe file of the custom boat ?
2) normally the .exe file make folder and subfolder
3) afaik no, the .exe do all
4a) for offline game, click on "solo", then "custom race", then select one of your race, then click on "boat" for change the boat pre-selected in a new one.
4b) for online game click on "multiplayer", then "internet", and selected a race online from the list (you cannot change the boat because is a host selection), if u want to host a regatta on the internet screeen select "create", the select a race in your inventory, you are able to change the pre-selected boat by clicking.
note: the custom boat are install by default on
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Documents\32nd America's Cup\Boats the file is in this location .zip,
the skins of custom boat are save on
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Documents\32nd America's Cup\Skins\Boats\custom boat name\ _________________ aloha

I guess my guide on Northspace is not clear enough, because this is quite a common problem.
I've changed the wording and the new advice here http://www.northspace.co.uk/downloads.html#model_download is as follows. Let me know if it still is not clear pleae.:
Usually when you download a new model from a website, you get an .exe file, which is the installer. Just put it on your PC wherever you normally put downloads, so that you can find it again easily. Sometimes this installer exe file is inside a zip file which will need unzipped before you can run the installer.
Once you have the installer .exe file, run it by double clicking the icon and it will offer to install the boat to a default folder. This should be My Documents\32nd America's Cup on your C drive - which is the correct place for the vast majority of players. Accept this default and the installer will put the boat model and any associated skins in their correct place on your PC without you having to do anything manually.
Just for interest, the locations are as follows for the RC44:
The model is a zip file here - My Documents\32nd America's Cup\Boats\
The skins are zip files here - My Documents\32nd America's Cup\Skins\Boats\
You can add any personalised skins to that skin folder too. _________________ Sandy

Just want to add to Hula by saying in game if you go to Settings, then Boats.. you will see all of the boats you have in game and can select the skin you want to use for each class. |

Hi. I'm a new user and I'm confused. I've tried all these things and still I can't see the RC44 boat anywhere. I'm running Vista 64. I didn't take the default drive/folder to install the game but did for the RC44. Help |

\ok, the files should be in the users documents\vsk5 folder not the Americas cup folder that they're installed to.

Posted: 22 Dec 2008 7:53 Post subject: extra steps for Limited User accounts |
|
|
If you prefer to use a limited user account (LUA) for everyday online activity and limit use of the Administrator privileged account for installation of new software and so forth then you will need to install add-on boat models differently than described in the above posts and the included links. If somebody knows a less tedious way of achieving the same result (while still respecting the least-privileged user account LUA principle) then please advise.
NOTE: this process works for Windows XP Professional and may work for WinXP Home Edition if you are prepared to launch windows in safe mode just to alter NTFS permissions on some folders.
Yeah I know ... life with computers is not meant to be as complex as this.
I think the installer is messing up the NTFS permissions on folders it creates. This may be a case where manually installing boat models is less problematic than using an installer!
The problem
Since boat models (and skins) are stored in a subfolder under G:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\Vsk5Online it stands to reason that these boat models ought to be installed by the LUA and not by an Admin. (where G: or C: is a drive letter that depends on your windows installation)
However, when installing a boat model from an LUA the installer reports:
MaxiCat for VSK5 has not been installed because of the following reason:
Cannot create the following file:
G:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\Vsk5Online\Boats\MaxiCat\Orange2.$$A
You will have to run this utility again to completely install MaxiCat for VSK5
A similar message (in english or german) appears for 420er.exe, Maxicat_install.exe, Platu 25.exe, Tornado for VSK5.exe and RC44_Rel_1.0.exe.
The workaround
Step 1. Install as Admin
Install the boat models as Admin but specify the target folder using a path to the account with the LUA username, i.e.
G:\Documents and Settings\LUAname\My Documents\Vsk5Online
and not
G:\Documents and Settings\AdminName\My Documents\Vsk5Online
The subfolders created at step 1 are now owned by the Administrator or the Administrator's Group depending on your Local Security Policy settings. When you launch Vsk5Online as LUAname you will discover that you do not see the added boat models or their skins at the Settings - Boats - ModelName menu page.
Step 2. Change folder tree ownership to the LUA username
While still logged in as Admin
- navigate to G:\Documents and Settings\LUAname\My Documents\Vsk5Online
- right click on the Boats folder and select Properties
- if there is no tab labeled Security then you must disable simple file sharing. (trivial for WinXP Pro but only possible for WinXP Home if you first boot into safe mode. See also XP Home advanced file permissions)
From within the windows file/folder explorer select from the menu: Tools - Folder Options; select the View tab; scroll to the bottom of the list of Advanced settings and clear the checkbox next to "Use simple file sharing(Recommended)"
- select the Security tab and browse the list of "Group or user names" for the LUAname - it probably is there but the permissions are not appropriate
(Add the LUAname if need be.)
- Select the LUAname from the list at the top of that Security tab and then in the lower half of that tab check the box next to Full Control
- Repeat the above steps for the subfolder also named Boats but located at
G:\Documents and Settings\LUAname\My Documents\Vsk5Online\Skins
- You can now logout of the Admin account and login to the LUA
- Use windows file/folder explorer and navigate to
G:\Documents and Settings\LUAname\My Documents\Vsk5Online
- Right click on the Boats folder and select Properties then Security tab (again!)
- This time click the [Advanced] button (located in the lower right)
- At the bottom of the Permissions tab check the box labeled "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects (located at the bottom of that tab)
- Click [Apply] button once then [Yes] to confirm
- Click [OK] and then [OK] again to exit from the open security and properties windows.
- Repeat the above steps for the Boats folder at
G:\Documents and Settings\LUAname\My Documents\Vsk5Online\Skins
Now go ahead and launch Vsk5Online for the LUA and navigate to the Settings - Boat menu page. Verify that the newly added boat models can be seen and that the default skins are available.
If the boat and sails appear gold all over then you have forgotten to repeat the above steps for the Skins\Boats folder. |

To race it you need to join or create a race online which has this boat specified. _________________ Sandy

Just to clarify - the free to download and play Vsk5online game does not allow you to create a race using any course other than those that came with the Nadeo download. See this thread for greater clarification of this point.
Specifically, courses installed to a Tracks folder within the user profile folder tree are not accessible from the create race pages of Vsk5online.
Downloading the 25 or more currently available boat models is still a very good idea because it enables you to participate in races hosted by other users who are running the fully featured VSK5 software. |

I cannot test this but I guess you are probably correct regarding the installation of a custom boat under a limited account...
You cannot use any custom boat (or regular) in solo mode using vsk5online since solo mode and map editor is disable in that version. However, you can host such races provided you have donwloaded them before somehow (and of course configure your router/firewall correctly). _________________ www.virtual-winds.com |
