Hi friends,
the our friend Gennasail write that in our site Vska for resoleve problem conncetion on Vsk :
http://www.vskalive.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1333
notepad c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
Ps:
I hope very soon all online for sailing togheter and alwasy.....

Not sure if any of the Nadeo/Ubisoft technicians monitor the forum but in case they do, or someone can get this message through to them:
The reason for the connection issues hitting many people and randomly is the secondary name server: SDNS1.OVH.NET still has the old IP address for the game.ac32.virtualskipper.com
The main name server DNS.NADEO.COM has the right IP address, however if this server is unavailable at the time a look up is made then the secondary is used (may also happen if the route from the ISP to the name servers is significantly better to the second one).
Once that happens the incorrect IP address then becomes cached by the ISP (e.g. Optus in Australia right now) and served to everyone who connects through that ISP for up to 48 hours depending on cache time out. This is why people are seeing it intermittently coming and going.
Until the second name server is corrected the problem will persist, except for those who have edited their host files as explained earlier in the thread.
Would be great to get this fixed so we can keep as many sailors in what is a great online game!
Regards

Thinking some more on it, the primary name server should be replicating to the secondary name server. Looking at them they are on different networks so probably either a permissions problem (no update permissions) or a network/firewall problem (can't connect to push the update).
Hope this helps.
Cheers

If the DNS Vsk change IP in future ? :
Follow that procedure :
sdns1.ovh.net AAAA IPv6 address = 2001:41d0:1:4a8c::1
sdns1.ovh.net internet address = 213.251.188.140
Ever for fun |

Thanks Sandy
Hopefully we can get this resolved, especially for those who don't find this thread, or aren't up to editing their host files.
Cheers

Yeah that's it, it's ok now, so i dont need to translate jofy's post
I hope nadeo resolved that problem permanently.
For people who modified the hosts file, remove the line

from hosts file | Quote: | | c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts |
As a remark for vsk tecnical service, next time u do such changes, set the time to live to 60 seconds instead of default (86400) in your dns server |

That would be silly. You would load up authorative nameservers to the point where their admins would simply cut you off. 24 hours is pretty normal. |

Hi GennaSail
Yes looks like they've fixed by changing one of the name servers - however the new one isn't responding yet for a nslookup on game.ac32.virtualskipper.com so I wouldn't change your hosts file back just yet - I would suggest waiting until we can see what address it will return.
Once it is fixed, yes, best to remove the host file entry, however should wait at least 24hours before doing so to be sure ISP caches have cleared.
Also with the TTL, currently they have set at 38400 (10hrs), as Andy mentioned their domain hosts might be unhappy with it really low. Also unfortunately a few big ISP's ignore this and override with their own TTL on their DNS servers all for the sake of saving a few packets of data. So I would suggest everyone wait at least 24hrs before changing hosts files back.
Regards

Hi jeseter,
We have changed the secondary name server to SDNS2.OVH.NET which should be correctly updated in a few hours. I hope this will help. Let me know.

I dont think so andynz, 86400 is pretty normal if u are not changing your ip address, and the response query packet is pretty small. And i dont think we're so many to cut off the dns...
Maybe i've been exagerate with 60 seconds, maybe 600, but only while they're changing ip address, then restoring it to the usual 86400. |

Thanks Legor
That's looking much better!
Now it's fixed I recommend from tomorrow everyone remove the entry they added to their host file - see GennaSail post earlier for details.
If you leave the host entry in then you will have connection problems if the server is moved in the future. (It's very easy to forget that you've added a host entry - it's bitten me several times before...)
Cheers
