okay, I've downloaded a bunch of skins from virtual winds, but all I'm seeing for the most part are the no icons screen with blank white boats rotating above. I don't have photoshop and know absolutely nothing about mipmaps... please take pity on this dummy and shoot me detailed instructions on how to convert the files so that I may use them.

I don't think there is an easy way to convert them for you, so I suggest you only download skins made for VSK4 from virtual winds. Skins dated after November 2005 are most likely made for VSK4.
