|
|
Okay...I'm getting crushed upwind during online racing with ACC boats and can't seem to get any faster. Great starts...but within a few minutes, I've fallen to the back. I'm sure this has been covered but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for in searches. With #1 sail (small) I try to sail about 32 d TWA and keep heel around 17-19 degrees if possible. With #2 sail I try to sail about 36 d TWA- same 17-19 heel if possible. Are my anlges way off or should I be looking for clearer air? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks.

I am not quite sure your readings are correct--I don't think you can get 17-19 degree heel at 32 TWA, unless it is in a puff of 35 or so.
With a wind speed of 28, use the small jib, manual trim all the way in (some people don't, some do), and sail to a 17 degree heel--usually around 33.3 to 33.6 TWA...This should give you competitive boat speed upwind.
Then, it is just playing the wind shifts to make sure you are sailing on the lifted tack. |

There's a few ways of handling it, but here's what I do...
use genoa (#2) up to about 15kts
use staysail (#1) above that
use manual sheeting
sheet right on, then back off a fraction (one bar)
steer a course to aim for 17° heel.
ignore TWA largely |
