the program 'stops responding'. I can kill it with the task manager and restart it.

The event log states something along the lines of 'program stopped responding'. It seems like it's all related to VSK, not a driver.

From a position of ignorance (eheh maybe not the best place !) is it worth trying a clean boot of your machine to help eliminate other background programmes as being the cause?

Microsoft have a page with instructions for this here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

Could you copy/paste the full text of the logged error messages here? Check the system and application logs for any other errors/warning at around the same time; paste those here as well. Also, be sure to submit the error information to Microsoft; MS does forward the information it collects to developers.

Some other things to check:

  • Make sure all remnants of the old ATI drivers have been removed from your system. Run the ATI Catalyst program to uninstall the ATI drivers (if you haven't already), and then use a 3rd party utility like Driver Sweeper to remove anything left behind.
  • Check you disk for errors and defrag if you haven't done so lately.
  • What version are your nVidia drivers? Did you get the drivers directly from the nVidia web site or did you rely on Windows Update?

Disks are good... have one new hard drive, same problem on it. Newest drivers direct from Nvida, uninstalled the old ati drivers with catalyst.

If I remove and reinstall VSk, and change the installation directory to a name that hasn't been used before such as (E:/VSK-installJan29) it seems to hold stable indefinitely... If I use the same installation directory as the previous installation, it starts crashing immediately.

However, lately this workaround seems to be failing me as well... Once it starts crashing, it always stays bad... and increases with frequency.

I'm seriously stumped.

Ran the drivesweeper... found some old AMD drivers... maybe that's it?

Here's what I found in the event viewer...

Oh, and I did drivesweeper, but I wasn't in safe mode... will that matter? I couldn't scroll through the menus at boot since my keyboard wasn't connecting (cause it's USB I think...)

I am guessing that you have spent a lot of time so far trying to resolve this .... without any success unfortunately.

If I were you I would give serious thought to a complete reinstall of Windows and as soon as that is complete the first application / data I would put on would be VSK....

A pain ... I know .. but it might be the shorter option time wise.

So I tried a new OS install on a new drive and it worked fine... however, went to update the OS, and the whole deal crashed due to startup problems.

I noticed that the only driver missing was the Realtek Audio driver.

So on my regular system, I deleted the 'realtek driver' and rebooted, allowing windows to install the default HD audio driver instead. It's worked fine since, I've been spec'ing matches the last two days, and haven't had a crash yet.

I'm leary to declare victory, but it appears that I might have finally solved it.

To sum up... if you're getting random freeze ups during play, remove the realtek audio driver.

Thanks for this info which should help others too I guess.

I'll make the topic sticky & add - 'resolved' to the title.

I think that is the case where you have a sound card, while you also have the onboard sound from motherboard... If both of them are enabled problems like that you describe have occured.. Therefore you have to disable one of them usually the onboard sound if you want to keep your sound card...

Since modern motherboards have a good onboard sound card, I have completely removed my once expensive bought separate card, now all I have is the onboard sound and no conflicts watsoever..

Experienced the same issue with above on other games like PES and did some time to figure out what was wrong.

Alex

P.S. I remember however that a windows update on the onboard sound card also produced problems with the upgraded driver, so I keep the original driver and ask windows update to never update this... (hide update)

Only have onboard sound... however the problem does seem audioboard related.

I still get freezes... problem seemed to go away for a while, but now it's back, and my typical workarounds of reinstalling the game haven't seemed to be working.

Just noticed I've got 5 audio controllers loaded....

"high definition audio device"
and 4 "NVIDIA High Definition Audio" I just disabled the NVIDIA, we'll see if that helps... who knows.
